Heads Up, LA: Overnight Closures Hit the 405 and the 91 This Week

Caltrans is running overnight lane, ramp, and connector closures on the I-405 through the Sepulveda Pass and on SR-91 from Cerritos to Gardena, Monday, July 27 through Friday, July 31 — here's when, where, and how to route around them.

If your week takes you over the hill or across the South Bay after dark, build in extra time. Caltrans is closing lanes, ramps, and connectors overnight on two of LA's busiest freeways — the I-405 through the Sepulveda Pass and State Route 91 between Cerritos and Gardena — Monday night, July 27, through Friday morning, July 31.

Both are maintenance projects timed for the quietest hours, with work generally wrapping by the morning commute. Message signs will mark detours, but the closures shift location night to night, so Caltrans QuickMap is your best friend before you roll.

The 405 Through the Sepulveda Pass

Overnight, roughly 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., crews will shut up to four lanes in each direction across sections of the Sepulveda Pass, with the work-zone speed limit dropped to 55 mph. Northbound, expect up to four lanes closed between Wilshire Boulevard and Skirball Center Drive/Mulholland, plus closures of the Wilshire and Sunset on-ramps to the northbound 405, the off-ramp to Getty Center Drive, and the Sepulveda Boulevard on-ramp. Southbound, up to four lanes go down between Skirball/Mulholland and Wilshire, tapering to fewer lanes north toward the 101, along with the off-ramp to southbound Wilshire.

It's all part of the $143.7 million I-405 Pavement Rehabilitation Project between Van Nuys and Westwood — resurfacing meant to smooth out and extend the life of one of the most heavily traveled stretches of freeway in the country.

The 91 From Cerritos to Gardena

Down in the South Bay and Gateway Cities, SR-91 gets overnight lane reductions — generally down to two lanes each direction between Vermont Avenue in Gardena and the Orange County line in Cerritos — plus rolling full closures of connectors and ramps as crews move location to location between about 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. There are also scattered daytime ramp closures in Long Beach (roughly 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) for tree trimming. Detours will be marked, and the big interchange connectors at the 110, 710, and 605 may close in stages overnight.

This one is a $34 million sign rehabilitation project spanning a 14.7-mile stretch of the 91 — upgrading roadside and overhead signs and lighting, restoring landscaping, replacing guardrail, and adding worker-safety improvements. Real-talk LA: if you're crossing the 405 over the hill late this week, either pad your drive by 20-30 minutes or drop down to Sepulveda Boulevard, which runs right alongside the freeway through the pass.
