Brooklyn’s astrology-themed bar Mood Ring is preparing a second location at 425 W. Gin Ling Way in Chinatown Central Plaza, in a space once home to the Hong Kong Café. Co-owners Vanessa Li and Bowen Goh plan to bring zodiac cocktails and cinema-inspired design to Los Angeles. The planned interior pairs velvet booths and tarot-card murals with galaxy-inspired bar tops and neon lighting. Li and Goh named their original Brooklyn bar after Wong Kar-wai’s In the Mood for Love. An extreme heat warning remains in effect for the coasts and valleys of Los Angeles and Ventura counties until 8:00pm Thursday, October 8. The National Weather Service forecasts temperatures of 90 to 100°F along the coast and up to 106°F in the valleys within the warning area. Drink plenty of fluids, spend time in air-conditioned spaces, and check on relatives and neighbors. Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle, even with the windows cracked. Forecasters say the prolonged heat could require an extension, so check the latest local warning before making outdoor plans. Burbank’s new terminal is scheduled to open October 13
Hollywood Burbank Airport’s nearly $1.3 billion replacement terminal is scheduled to open Tuesday, October 13, following Monday’s ribbon-cutting. The 355,000-square-foot building keeps the airport’s 14 gates while adding expanded security screening, more charging ports and an indoor baggage hall with three carousels. Travelers will still board outdoors; when the terminal opens, the main entrance will move to Winona Avenue and Hollywood Way. The project adds a seven-level parking structure across from the terminal entrance and a separate rideshare pickup lot nearby. At opening, valet service will move to the new terminal and Lot E will close permanently, while rental-car customers will take shuttles to the existing facility across Hollywood Way.
Faring and Gensler have revised plans for a five-story office project at 9160-9176 Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood. The proposal includes about 52,999 square feet of office space, ground-floor retail and food uses, terraced decks and underground parking. The building would replace a shuttered car dealership at Sunset Boulevard and Cory Avenue. Plans also call for LED billboards at the facade’s northwest and northeast corners, with any full digital wrap following a separate permitting process. Approvals are still pending, with no confirmed construction start date.
A proposed eight-story building would bring 79 apartments and about 12,187 square feet of ground-floor commercial space to 177-195 S. Robertson Boulevard, just south of Wilshire. OHR Hamet, Inc. plans a mix of studios and one-, two- and three-bedroom homes, with parking for 89 vehicles. Twelve apartments are proposed for moderate- and very low-income households as part of the density bonus request. Gabbay Architects’ design pairs cantilevered balconies with a top-floor terrace overlooking Robertson Boulevard. The development would replace a vehicle service center and a preschool.
El Segundo’s Varda Space Industries has raised $251 million to expand its work on pharmaceutical processing in orbit. The Series D round, announced September 30, was led by Lux Capital and Natural Capital and brings the company’s total capital raised to $598 million. Varda says microgravity allows ingredients used in medicines to crystallize in forms that cannot be produced under Earth’s gravity. The company reports six successful reentry missions since its first launch in 2023, with more than a dozen additional launches and reentries planned through 2028. The funding is intended to support more frequent missions and closer pharmaceutical partnerships as Varda works toward a medicine made in space for use on Earth.
Ynon Kreiz moves from Mattel to Skydance’s co-CEO role
Former Mattel chief Ynon Kreiz is joining David Ellison at the helm of Skydance, the newly combined Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery business. The acquisition closed Tuesday, a day after the company announced a leadership plan naming Ellison chairman and CEO and Kreiz co-CEO. Ellison will focus on long-term strategy, creative direction, technology and capital allocation, while Kreiz will handle day-to-day management and integration. The Television Academy and Prime Video have announced a six-year agreement making the streamer the exclusive global home of the Emmy Awards beginning in 2027. The ceremony will remain a live September event and will be free to watch, with no subscription required, in more than 240 countries and territories. The deal replaces the rotating arrangement among ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC, which ended with the 2026 telecast. The partners also plan new ways for fans to discover and celebrate television throughout the year, extending the agreement beyond awards night.

Prime Video is lining up a November release for The Boy Who Stole Billions?, a three-part docuseries about FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried. According to Prime Video, the series features Bankman-Fried speaking from prison, along with interviews with people who helped build the cryptocurrency exchange. It revisits FTX’s November 2022 collapse and the former crypto executive’s fraud conviction, while exploring his inner circle and relationship with Caroline Ellison. Amazon MGM Studios, Propagate and West Buttermilk are producing the series, with Nanette Burstein among its executive producers.
