EATS

STILETTO

Stiletto has opened at Santa Monica Airport, a live-fire steakhouse sharing a restored 1940s building with Matilda’s, the bakery we featured Wednesday, from the same owner, Sean Martin. Ireland-born chef Patrick Powell, a veteran of London’s Chiltern Firehouse, cooks over the flames with beef from Texas’s Rosewood Ranch: bone-in rib-eye, prime rib and steak au poivre, alongside steak tartare, grilled hispi cabbage and peri peri chicken. Start with a Matilda’s baguette and butter or an anchovy gilda, grab a martini or a pint of Guinness at the 38-seat marble bar, and save room for sticky toffee pudding. The name salutes the Douglas X-3 Stiletto jet at the airport’s neighboring museum.

GUANATOS TACOS

Guanatos Tacos is serving up tacos on Hollywood Blvd., bringing its taqueria to Hollywood from its home base north of the city, with locations in Santa Clarita, Canyon Country and Sylmar. The name nods to Guadalajara, the city locals affectionately call Guanatos. Expect house Guanatos tacos and classic street tacos, cheesy birria quesadillas and an Orange Bang to wash it all down.

LODGE BREAD

Lodge Bread is bringing its naturally leavened loaves to Pasadena, with its newest bakery café opening this fall on Lincoln Avenue near the Altadena border, alongside neighbors Homestate and Kismet. The two-time James Beard Award semifinalist is known for its country, seeded, ancient grain, olive and cheese loaves, plus challah on Fridays. The café menu leans into sourdough toasts topped with ricotta and seasonal jam or smoked salmon, shakshuka and baked eggs for breakfast, and stacked sandwiches like smoked pastrami with Russian dressing and a jambon beurre on baguette. Pumpkin and pecan pies are also up for Thanksgiving preorder.

WORLD’S TALLEST CHRISTMAS TREE

The world’s tallest fresh-cut Christmas tree has arrived at Citadel Outlets in Commerce. It’s a 115-foot white fir that traveled about 600 miles over three days from near Mt. Shasta. Dressed in more than 18,000 lights and 10,000 bows and ornaments, it stands 35 feet taller than the Rockefeller Center tree and 25 feet taller than the Santa Monica Pier Ferris wheel. See it lit up this Saturday, Nov. 7, at the free 25th annual Tree Lighting Ceremony and Concert, starting at 5:00pm with live performances, a visit from Santa and the debut of nightly snow flurries.

MASS-TIMBER OFFICES FOR CHINATOWN

Plans for a new office campus at 130 W. College St. in Chinatown are moving forward after approval from the Los Angeles City Planning Commission. The Riboli family is behind the five-story, all-electric project, designed by Grimshaw Architects and built from mass timber. It would bring more than 224,000 square feet of offices, plus a restaurant and shops, to a 2.2-acre surface parking lot near Chinatown Station. Two office wings would frame a landscaped opening with a second-level terrace, outdoor workspaces would line Bruno Street, and storefronts, not parking, would face Alameda, Bruno and Main streets.

The opening ties into its IPASA NATIN campaign, which means Pass It On and celebrates the Filipino tradition of sharing food, stories and culture across generations.

THE ROCKFORD FILES RETURNS

The Rockford Files is back, with David Boreanaz stepping in as Los Angeles private eye Jim Rockford in NBC’s reboot of the classic detective series, which first ran on the network from 1974 to 1980. This time, Rockford has been paroled for a crime he didn’t commit and is working to clear his name while caught between the police and organized crime. Michaela McManus, Ilfenesh Hadera and Jacki Weaver round out the cast. The series premieres Saturday, Jan. 2, at 5:00pm PT after an NBC NFL game, then moves to its regular Thursday slot on Jan. 7. In a nod to the original’s famous answering-machine opening, fans can call (760) JIM-ROCK to hear a message from Boreanaz himself.

SPORTS

🔥 SACRAMENTO

LUKA KEEPS DROPPING 40

Luka Dončić is on a scoring tear. He put up 40 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists Wednesday night as the Lakers beat the Kings 116-103 in Sacramento for their third straight win. That’s his third straight 40-point game and his fourth in five, and his 308 points through eight games make him the first player to top 300 that fast since Michael Jordan in 1988-89. Austin Reaves added 21 and Walker Kessler chipped in 15 points and 4 blocks for the 7-2 Lakers, who host Portland tonight.

🐻 MINNEAPOLIS

UNDEFEATED BRUINS HIT THE ROAD

Undefeated UCLA puts its perfect record on the line tomorrow at Minnesota, with kickoff at 9:00am PT on FOX. The 8-0 Bruins are ranked No. 5 in the AP poll and No. 8 in the College Football Playoff rankings, their highest AP ranking since 2001, and a win would give them only the fourth 9-0 start in program history. Running back Wayne Knight leads the Big Ten with 14 total touchdowns and has scored in every game this season. Bob Chesney is already the first UCLA head coach to open his tenure 8-0, and the Bruins have climbed from No. 23 to No. 5 in just five weeks.
