Downstairs, Studio is an intimate nightclub wrapped in black velvet. Rooms start around $450 a night, and non-guests can buy a $35 day pass to The Roof until 5:00pm.
Qin West Noodle is bringing its homestyle Chinese noodle bowls to Old Pasadena at 43 E. Colorado Blvd., joining sister shops in Westwood, University Park, Arcadia, Irvine and San Diego. Matilda’s has opened in a renovated 1940s building at Santa Monica Airport, 3200 Airport Ave., calling itself a California bakery with an accent. Owner Sean Martin named it after his daughter, and founding baker François Pied, trained at École Lenôtre in Paris, leads the ovens with lead baker Abel Pulsifer. The croissants take four days from mix to counter, alongside a shakshuka danish, passion guava danish, sausage rolls, baguettes and a menu of eight international butters, with coffee from Caffè Luxxe. Matilda’s is open Wednesday through Sunday from 7:00am to 3:00pm, so get there early before favorites sell out.
Space Shuttle Endeavour gets a new home on Nov. 13, when the California Science Center’s Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center opens to the public in Exposition Park. The 200,000-square-foot center shows Endeavour standing 20 stories tall in launch position, making it the world’s only complete, authentic space shuttle system on display. Visitors can also try a replica flight deck, ride a gantry-style lift and drop 45 feet on the Shuttle Descent Slide. Endeavour first flew in 1992 and completed 25 missions before its slow roll through the streets from LAX in 2012 thrilled millions across Southern California.
A third olive ridley sea turtle nest was found Sunday near the Ventura Pier, only the third ever documented on the Southern California shoreline. The first two turned up in Seal Beach and Huntington Beach in September, and their 204 eggs are now incubating at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, where California’s first-ever sea turtle hatching could happen any day. Experts link the visits to El Niño’s warmer waters. Olive ridleys are protected under the Endangered Species Act, so if you spot a nest, give it plenty of space.
Fresh renderings are out for two Tishman Speyer housing projects in Downtown Santa Monica, recently presented to the city’s Architectural Review Board. Next to the Santa Monica Library at 1325 6th St., an eight-story building would add 110 apartments. One block away at 1323 5th St., a five-story building would bring 35 homes that are 100 percent affordable, covering the off-site affordable housing required for several nearby Tishman projects. Both are designed by Ottinger Architects, and they’re part of eight Santa Monica properties Tishman Speyer bought in 2021, four of which are already complete.
