Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage

The Santa Ana Canyon.
Historians generally trace the name to Santa Ana Canyon, the narrow gap where the Santa Ana River passes from Riverside County into Orange County and where the gusts can get especially fierce. The popular legend that they started out as ‘Satan winds’ doesn’t hold up well, since the Spanish word for Satan is Satanás. Whatever you call them, the winds have long starred in LA literature, from Raymond Chandler’s 1938 short story ‘Red Wind’ to Joan Didion’s essay ‘Los Angeles Notebook.’
