Hotter than normal conditions hold all week, and the real story is the spread. Morning low clouds are likely along the LA coast each day before burning off, keeping the metro basin in the low to mid 80s while inland valleys run 86 to 90 and the high desert climbs from the upper 90s today toward 105 by Friday. A strong upper high settles over the Four Corners Thursday and peaks Saturday, with Extreme Heat Warnings already set for the Apple and Lucerne valleys Thursday morning and the Inland Empire on Friday. A large south swell from Hurricane Genevieve arrives tonight and builds through the weekend, bringing big waves and strong rip currents to south facing beaches.

Kingbop has opened its second storefront at 709 S Vermont Ave, trading the oversized kimbap of its original Harvard Heights location for a tighter counter-service menu built to move. The lineup centers on the crunchy sushi tacos that built the name, alongside loaded fries, crisp starters, and Korean fried chicken. Standouts include a pork belly taco with samgyeopsal, k-pepper mayo, and fresh serrano, plus a double-crispy shrimp taco with eel sauce and spicy mayo crab. Doors open at 11 AM daily, running to 9 PM Sunday through Thursday and 10 PM on Friday and Saturday.

Dobo Fires Up The Fold

Dobo has opened at 1259 S Glendale Ave with a tight pan-Asian menu built around a pizza oven. The signature is the Dobo Fold, a sandwich and flatbread hybrid whose outer shell bakes to order in high heat, then gets loaded with a protein and finished with anything from cilantro-lime aioli to house-fermented kimchi. Grain bowls anchor the rest of the board, built on heritage Duroc pork belly and Tamaki Gold Koshihikari rice. The counter-service room runs Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 8 PM and Sundays from noon to 6 PM.

Lielle Reopens With A Michelin Star

Chef Marcus Jernmark closed his 42-seat Pico-Robertson dining room for its annual summer break on June 28, and the team is targeting a mid-August return. The room picked up a MICHELIN Star in late June, which lands it among the most talked-about Westside tables heading into fall. Reservations for August, September and October are already live through the restaurant’s booking platform, which runs on a rolling two-month release. Jernmark’s team is also posting guest winemaker pairings and seasonal menu changes as they land.

The US Open Hits Its Main Event

The Lexus US Open of Surfing runs through August 3 on the south side of the Huntington Beach Pier, and the headline act starts tomorrow. The Challenger Series brings 80 men and 50 women from around the world beginning at 7:35 AM Wednesday, with Huntington Beach’s own Kanoa Igarashi chasing a third win on his home break. Heats run to 3:35 PM daily and the festival village stays open 8 AM to 4 PM with roughly two dozen vendors, big screens, and a Beach Bar pouring for the 21-and-over crowd. Leave your own drinks at home, security is checking bags at the entry. Real Estate and Allah-Las play the music stage Friday night, Local Natives and Arcy Drive follow Saturday, and Brodie the Goldendoodle holds court at the sandcastle Saturday morning. Park early, the close lots go fast.

UCLA's Lauren Betts was named Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year on Monday night in New York, taking home the Honda Cup as the top female athlete across all NCAA sports. The senior center closed her career by leading the Bruins to their first NCAA championship, posting three straight double-doubles to finish March Madness and earning Most Outstanding Player of the tournament. She averaged 17.1 points and 8.8 rebounds while becoming the first athlete in Big Ten history to win Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year in the same season. The City Planning Commission has approved a six-story mixed-use building at 2800 West Jefferson Boulevard, replacing an auto body shop with 70 apartments and ground-floor retail. Designed by Kevin Tsai Architecture for owners Steve and Hannah Lim, the project spans roughly 70,852 square feet and mixes studios through three-bedrooms, with nine homes set aside for very-low-income households for 55 years. Plans keep 45 vehicle spaces plus 68 bike spaces, and pair a second-level courtyard with a 3,310-square-foot rooftop deck. The site sits about a half mile from the Expo/Crenshaw station on the K Line.

Space Magnets Land In LA

New Zealand's Zenno Astronautics is moving its headquarters to Los Angeles County, joining a wave of international aerospace firms setting up in the South Bay. The startup builds superconducting magnets that steer spacecraft, a technology it says no other company has flown, and it has put two into orbit so far. Chief Executive Max Arshavsky told the Business Journal the team is weighing Santa Monica, Hawthorne and El Segundo, with people and facilities in place well before the end of the year.
