Gateside by TSA PreCheck lets LAX travelers stroll terminals without a boarding pass

TSA PreCheck members can apply for a free Gateside pass to access Los Angeles International Airport’s post-security dining and retail areas up to three days before a visit, even when they are not flying.

The Transportation Security Administration has rolled out Gateside by TSA PreCheck, a new benefit that lets eligible travelers move beyond the security checkpoint at participating airports without a flight reservation. Members use their Known Traveler Number (KTN) to apply online, receive a free pass, and then present a REAL ID or other acceptable identification at a TSA PreCheck lane. Passes are valid for a single calendar day, can be used for multiple entries that day, and are subject to the same federal security regulations as ticketed passengers.

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is one of the 13 launch airports, joining Dallas-Fort Worth, San Diego, Las Vegas and others. The program is designed for “hellos and goodbyes,” layover meet-ups, and visits to airport restaurants and shops that were previously off-limits to non-travelers. Children may join if they are added to a parent or guardian’s reservation, and the service is offered at no charge.

Applicants must submit their request one to three days before the planned visit, log in to their TSA dashboard to show approval status, and be prepared for possible limits on daily pass issuance during peak periods. While the Gateside pass grants terminal access, travelers still pass through the standard TSA PreCheck screening lane; Touchless ID lanes are not available for this program.

Once through the TSA PreCheck lane, Gateside participants can wander the secure concourse to explore the array of dining venues and boutique shops that line the terminal. The TSA describes the benefit as a way to “enjoy shopping and dining beyond the TSA checkpoint,” restoring the pre-9/11 tradition of meeting friends over a meal or coffee before a flight. This access applies to all post-security food courts, specialty cafés, and retail outlets that were previously reserved for ticketed passengers.

Because the program is free, families can use the opportunity to treat children to a snack or browse souvenir shops while waiting for a loved one’s arrival. The TSA notes that visitors are held to the same airport code of conduct as ticketed travelers, meaning they must follow posted signage and federal regulations while inside the secure area. Any violation could result in revocation of the Gateside pass or civil penalties.

Airport operators anticipate that the added foot traffic will benefit concessionaires, especially during off-peak hours when gate-side traffic is typically low. While the TSA has not released specific sales data, the “Golden Age of Travel” branding suggests a broader strategy to boost the terminal experience for both travelers and non-travelers alike.

Begin by visiting the official Gateside portal on TSA.gov and clicking the Apply button. After signing in with a login.gov account, enter personal details that match the existing TSA PreCheck record, including the KTN, and select Los Angeles International Airport as the destination. The system will display approval status on the applicant’s dashboard; this must be shown to the TSA officer at the checkpoint, not a screenshot or printout.

On the day of the visit, present a REAL ID or another acceptable form of identification at the dedicated TSA PreCheck lane. The officer will verify the dashboard status and confirm that any accompanying children are listed on the reservation. After clearance, the traveler proceeds through security and can access any post-checkpoint amenities. Passes are valid only for the approved calendar day, but re-entry is permitted if the visitor returns later that same day.

If the TSA PreCheck lane is closed, the officer may direct the traveler to a standard screening lane, but the Gateside benefit still applies once the individual clears security. Passes are limited in number per day, so travelers are advised to apply early within the one-to-three-day window, especially during peak travel periods.

For Angelenos, Gateside turns LAX into a community hub rather than a transit point, letting families meet arriving service members, friends on layovers, or simply enjoy the terminal’s culinary scene without booking a flight. The free, secure access could reshape how locals use the airport for gatherings, especially in a city where traffic often makes airport visits a logistical challenge.
