Chipotle expands restaurant leadership pipeline, aims to place an apprentice in every restaurant by end of 2027
Chipotle Mexican Grill announced enhancements to its Apprentice program in Newport Beach, targeting placement of an apprentice in each of its more than 4,200 U.S. and Canada restaurants by the end of 2027.

In a Newport Beach release, Chipotle detailed a major upgrade to its Apprentice program, a cornerstone of its internal leadership pipeline. The company said it will place an Apprentice in every one of its more than 4,200 company-owned restaurants across the United States and Canada by the close of 2027, a move designed to reinforce management capacity as it pushes toward a 7,000-restaurant footprint.
Apprentices currently support roughly three-quarters of Chipotle’s locations, and the expansion will coincide with an expected opening of between 350 and 370 new restaurants in 2026. By extending the model across the entire portfolio, Chipotle hopes to create additional advancement opportunities for Crew Members while deepening its bench of restaurant managers.
The program’s growth is tied to a decade-long partnership with Guild’s Cultivate Education platform, which has enabled nearly 25,000 employees to enroll in tuition-free degree and certificate programs. Chipotle pays 100% of tuition for select degrees and offers up to $5,250 annually for other educational pursuits, a benefit that the company says has cut turnover by 66% among participants and boosted promotion rates.
Apprentice program expansion and operational impact
The enhanced Apprentice role is positioned as a bridge to General Manager status, giving high-performing employees responsibility for training, digital makeline oversight, and day-to-day operational execution. By delegating these tasks, General Managers can focus on broader strategic goals, improving both guest experience and operational consistency.
Apprentices also provide critical staffing coverage during peak periods and weekends, allowing teams to maintain focus on service standards. Restaurants that have integrated Apprentices report higher operational scores, which can translate into better economics over the long term.
With the goal of an Apprentice in every location by 2027, Chipotle expects the expanded pipeline to support its aggressive growth plan, ensuring each new restaurant is launched with a ready-made leadership structure rather than relying on external hires.
Cultivate Education partnership and employee outcomes
Marking the 10th anniversary of the Cultivate Education partnership, Chipotle highlighted that more than 14,000 employees have completed an education program, with 57% earning a college degree and 43% receiving a certificate. The initiative offers fully online bachelor’s and associate degrees, certificates, boot camps, language learning, high school completion, and college preparation programs.
Eligible employees can explore benefits at chipotle.guildeducation.com and apply for roles through the company’s career portal at careers.chipotle.com. The tuition assistance model, combined with one-on-one coaching, has produced a 66% lower average annual turnover rate for participants and a promotion frequency 1.4 times higher than non-participants.
Company leaders credit the education investment with strengthening the workforce as Chipotle scales. By fostering internal talent, the firm aims to keep its culture intact while delivering the consistent guest experiences that have earned it recognition on Fast Company’s 2026 Best Workplaces for Innovators list and TIME’s World’s Best Companies 2026 list.
Chipotle’s apprenticeship push matters for Los Angeles because the city hosts over 200 of the chain’s locations, many of which are near underserved neighborhoods. Expanding internal leadership creates stable, well-trained managers who can deliver consistent service and provide career ladders for local crew members, reinforcing both economic mobility and neighborhood cohesion.
