๐ŸŒค๏ธ DISCUSSION

The National Weather Service is tracking a chance of thunderstorms each day through Wednesday, with the highest odds Tuesday over the mountains and interior valleys. Isolated lightning can spark fire starts, gusts can reach 50 mph, and brief heavy showers can flood roads, so if you hear thunder, head inside. Around the city it stays classic August: patchy morning fog, afternoon sun, and highs easing from 86 Tuesday into the upper 70s by Friday.

ARTS DISTRICT

Lucky's Steakhouse Lands in the Arts District

The Montecito steakhouse and celebrity hangout (with another location in Malibu) now has an Arts District outpost. Unlike the big, warehouse-y restaurants in the neighborhood, this spot leans old school: checkered floors, a handsome mahogany bar pouring strong martinis, and steakhouse staples like shrimp cocktail and a dry-aged filet mignon bathed in cognac peppercorn cream sauce.

Char Burgers Brings Back Classic Comfort on Daly

A recently opened Mexican-American neighborhood spot on Daly Street in East Los Angeles, already highly rated by locals for bringing back classic comfort food flavors. The menu runs from burgers and seasoned fries to tacos and all-day breakfast. Whether you are there for a burger or a breakfast plate, the pitch is the same: the classics, done right, in a neighborhood that is happy to have them.

General Lee's Opens the Bamboo Room on Santa Monica

Chinatown's General Lee's heads west with the Bamboo Room, a tiki bar in the former Mom's Bar space on Santa Monica Boulevard. The new spot trades the classic Chinatown look for a South Pacific vibe, with a daily happy hour from 5 to 7 p.m. and live music most nights, from jazz to DJs spinning R&B and house. Sip a Jade Smoke with mezcal, lemongrass, kiwi, and lemon, or keep it classic with a mai tai.

Netflix Keeps Los Angeles Front and Center

Netflix's new Made in California report is a love letter to filming at home: more than 300 productions have shot primarily in Los Angeles since 2018, and 2025 alone brought over 45 productions, work with more than 2,900 LA County businesses, and over $400 million into the local economy. This year is pacing the same, with hometown titles like Nobody Wants This, The Lincoln Lawyer, and Nemesis turning the city's streets into the set.

Manhattan Place Refiles: 147 Units, All Affordable

A vacant Koreatown lot just northwest of Olympic and Western has been approved for housing twice, appealed twice, and built zero times. A new application filed July 30 changes the plan: a seven-story DFH Architects building with 147 apartments, 146 of them income-restricted (116 Low Income, 30 Moderate Income). The earlier approval ran through TOC incentives with 12 affordable homes; the refile runs through AHIP as a 100 percent affordable project, adds 27 homes, drops the studios, and includes 23 three-bedrooms for families. Our full story traces the site's history from The Heights to Jamison to now.

Sunset Boulevard Project Wins a One-Year Extension

The former Jack in the Box site on West Sunset Boulevard has sat vacant through its entire approval process, with an entitlement dating to a 2018 case. On July 30, California Food Managers filed to extend the Coastal Development Permit for one year, keeping the five-story, 39-unit mixed-use project alive. The building itself is unchanged: wood-frame apartments over a concrete podium with ground-floor retail, designed by Farzin Maly. The one number that did change matters: the restricted count doubled from four Very Low Income units to eight, adding four Moderate Income homes in a neighborhood that has very few. Aaron Donald's Return Timeline Comes Into Focus

Aaron Donald's comeback decision now has a target: Pro Football Talk reports a decision is expected by the end of the week, after the 35-year-old worked out with the team on August 4 (Sean McVay: he looked outstanding). If Donald says yes, the Rams would give him a few weeks of football work, then aim for roughly 30 to 40 snaps in the Week 1 opener against the 49ers in Australia. He retired after the 2023 season with 111 sacks and three Defensive Player of the Year awards, tied for the most ever. One more run, and No. 99 stands alone.

โœ… TRIVIA ANSWER
ANSWER: Three times.

Donald won Defensive Player of the Year in 2017, 2018, and 2020, joining Lawrence Taylor and J.J. Watt as the only three-time winners ever. If the comeback timeline the Rams are mapping holds, No. 99 gets one more run at standing alone.
