### VENICE: Sticky Rice brings its Thai menu to Rose Avenue

Sticky Rice has a Venice address: **523 Rose Avenue**, with takeout and delivery available and dine-in listed as coming soon. The LA restaurant, which started at Grand Central Market in 2013, serves Thai favorites including pad see-ew, boat noodles, and khao soi, a northern Thai curry noodle soup.

The brand's menu also includes fish-sauce-glazed wings and panang curry fries. Check the Venice ordering menu for availability before planning your pickup.

### HOLLYWOOD: Monroe Place opens its second sandwich shop in Hollywood

Monroe Place has brought its Culver City sandwich operation to **1253 Vine Street** in Hollywood. The new shop is open daily from **11 a.m. to 4 p.m., or until sold out**.

The Infatuation highlights the W.L.F., a turkey sandwich with pomegranate molasses and barberries, alongside chicken Caesar focaccia and a baguette filled with burrata and confit tomato. Prefer a bowl to bread? The shop can turn its sandwiches into salads on request.

### COMING SOON: Café Maghreb prepares for its first permanent restaurant

Chef **Majda Belaroui's Café Maghreb** is working toward a permanent home. Beverly Press reported in July that the North African pop-up planned to open its first brick-and-mortar restaurant in November.

Belaroui's cooking offers a preview of the project: her pop-up menus have included sardine and merguez sandwiches, msemen, pastries, and traditional sweets. We'll be watching for the restaurant's confirmed opening date and menu as the next chapter takes shape.

### SAVE THE DATE: Live On Sunset brings a free music festival to the Strip

The Sunset Strip is getting a day of its own. **Live On Sunset** will bring a free music festival to Sunset Boulevard between Doheny Drive and San Vicente Boulevard on **Saturday, November 14**. The City of West Hollywood's event will feature an outdoor stage, performances across genres and generations, activities, and food and drinks.

### COASTAL OUTLOOK: A strengthening El Niño puts coastal conditions in focus

Ocean conditions are worth watching as Southern California heads toward fall. Palisades News reports that approaching Kelvin waves could raise coastal water levels and worsen erosion when combined with high tides and storm surf.

NOAA's **September 10 outlook** confirms a strengthening El Niño and a greater than 90 percent chance of a very strong event this fall and winter. That is a seasonal outlook, not a guarantee of a particular local storm. Keep current beach conditions and official forecasts in the mix when planning a coastal visit.

### USC: USC's virtual-production center takes shape in planning documents

USC is planning a new home for virtual filmmaking at **3131 S. Figueroa Street**, beside its Robert Zemeckis Center for Digital Arts. City-filed plans reviewed by CurationsLA show a two-story Blavatnik Center for Virtual Production, supported by a **$25 million lead gift** from the Blavatnik Family Foundation.

The planned facility includes two LED-wall stages, performance-capture technology, classrooms, and labs for real-time digital production. USC's target is **fall 2027**. The current milestone is the planning proposal; an opening or construction start has not been announced in this report.

### LAX: LAX visitors can apply to meet loved ones beyond security

**LAX is participating in Gateside by TSA PreCheck**, which lets eligible visitors apply for free access beyond airport security without a plane ticket. That can mean a gate-side goodbye, a meal with a friend on a layover, or a welcome for someone coming home.

Apply with your Known Traveler Number **one to three days before your visit**, then check the portal for approval. Bring an accepted form of identification and use a TSA PreCheck screening lane, rather than Touchless ID. Each approved pass covers one calendar day, with re-entry allowed that day. Daily pass limits apply.

### PORT OF LOS ANGELES: Port of Los Angeles caps its busiest three-month cargo stretch

The Port of Los Angeles processed **955,907 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs)** of cargo in August, closing the busiest three consecutive months in its history. **More than 2.9 million TEUs** moved through the Port during June, July, and August, according to its September 9 release.

August volume was roughly level with last year and **6 percent above the month's five-year average**. Executive Director Gene Seroka credited resilient consumer demand, early holiday shipments, and a broad mix of cargo for the strong summer.

Through the first eight months of 2026, the Port handled **just over 7 million TEUs**, running **1.5 percent ahead** of the same period last year.

### WEST LA: Sports Basement plans a November opening in West LA

Sports Basement is preparing to open an **80,000-square-foot store at 11854 W. Olympic Boulevard** in November. The outdoor retailer's own announcement lists camping gear, bikes, snow equipment, running shoes, and team-sports supplies, alongside bike, snow, racket, and rental services.

The West LA location is also hiring. An exact opening day has not been posted, so the company's store page is the place to follow for updates and available roles.

Puppets, art, and a whole day outside: **Bob Baker Day** returns to LA State Historic Park on **Sunday, September 20, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.** The free festival celebrates the legacy of Bob Baker and the marionette theater he founded.

Organizers strongly encourage an RSVP for event updates. Donations help keep the festival free, and optional VIP passes include guaranteed parking and limited-edition merchandise. General admission does not require buying a VIP pass.

### FILM: A Santa Monica pilot's first flight becomes a short film

A pandemic-era introductory flight changed the course of Tedd's life. **One Flight Became His Life**, a short documentary directed by Valentine Di Marco, follows the LA pilot on a helicopter trip from Santa Monica along the Southern California coast.

The film arrives **Wednesday, September 16**, through the independent documentary series What a Life. Santa Monica Daily Press reports that it will be available on the series' YouTube channel, **@whatalife.stories**, and its website.
