The last weekend of summer belonged to the same movie as the four before it: Spider-Man: Brand New Day took its fifth straight No. 1 with an estimated $22.2 million, pushing its domestic total to $891.5 million, now second all time behind only Star Wars: The Force Awakens, with a worldwide haul past $2.33 billion, fourth all time.

The story of the weekend played out one rung down. Coyote vs. Acme, the Looney Tunes hybrid Warner Bros. shelved as a write-off three years ago before Ketchup Entertainment picked it up, opened to $15.5 million from roughly 3,575 theaters, earning an A CinemaScore and a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes.

1. Spider-Man: Brand New Day: Five straight weekends on top. Second-biggest domestic run ever behind The Force Awakens, fourth-biggest worldwide.
2. Coyote vs. Acme: Shelved as a tax write-off in 2023, released by the studio that bought it out of the vault, and opened at No. 2 with an A CinemaScore. The audience got a vote after all.
3. The Odyssey: Nolan's epic keeps stacking in week seven, one of the steadiest holds of the summer.
4. Insidious: Out of the Further: The standard second-weekend horror drop, with a domestic total already well past double the budget.
5. The Dog Stars: Audiences skipped Ridley Scott's post-apocalyptic drama in its debut. Everyone has had enough apocalypse for a while.

## The Read

The chart below is this column's new furniture: rank, the number, and what the number means, every Monday. Figures are weekend estimates as reported, never a guess, and the receipts row at the bottom of the chart names where every count came from.

This week's read: audiences will show up for a movie a studio gave up on, and they will skip a prestige apocalypse. The gap between Coyote's reception and The Dog Stars' quiet start is the whole modern theatrical market in two rows.

## Curator's Note

This is the industry town, so the Monday chart is not trivia here, it is the neighborhood scoreboard. The write-off that out-opened a $75 million prestige play is somebody's block in Burbank having a very interesting morning. This chart now files every Monday, and a Thursday preview joins it when the fall slate heats up.
